The Elio Grasso estate, located in the municipality of Monforte d'Alba, boasts 42 hectares of land, 24 of which are forests and meadows surrounding the 18 hectares of vineyards, within the World Heritage Site. Elio Grasso and his son Gianluca produce wine from prime Piedmontese sites, producing highly acclaimed wines such as Barolo Chinera, Barolo Casa Màte, and Barolo Runcot Riserva. The call of the land ultimately proved strong, and returning to Monforte d'Alba was likely only a matter of time. And what he returned to was, in fact, an impressive estate: 18 hectares of vineyards including prime sites such as Chiniera, Casa Matè, and Runcot. In 1978, Grasso decided to ferment and age the grapes from his best plots himself, pioneering the marketing of a classic Barolo as well as a series of vintages. As a producer, Grasso has always been attentive to tradition, but, drawing on the experience gained by many generations of his family in the region, he has never sought to radically transform his wines: both Chiniera and Casa Matè are aged in barrels; only Runcot, a Riserva, is aged in small barrels. Innovation, meanwhile, is represented by two other wines in the range: the excellent barrel-aged Barbera Martina and Educato, a barrel-fermented Chardonnay.
