About this winery

The Elio Grasso estate, located in the municipality of Monforte d'Alba, boasts 42 hectares of land, 24 of which are forests and meadows surrounding the 18 hectares of vineyards, within the World Heritage Site. Elio Grasso and his son Gianluca produce wine from prime Piedmontese sites, producing highly acclaimed wines such as Barolo Chinera, Barolo Casa Màte, and Barolo Runcot Riserva. The call of the land ultimately proved strong, and returning to Monforte d'Alba was likely only a matter of...

Product notes

Slightly clayey limestone soil, southern exposure, 300-350 meters on 30-year-old vines First vintage: 1995

Production notes

The vinification of Barolo DOCG Riserva Rüncot® involves alcoholic fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, with daily pumping over. After alcoholic fermentation, followed by malolactic fermentation, the wine is aged in French oak barrels. Typically bottled in August, Barolo DOCG Riserva Rüncot® then rests in the cellar for 18 to 24 months before being released.

Tasting notes

Elio Grasso's Barolo DOCG Riserva Rüncot is a red wine of great elegance and structure. Its color is an intense garnet red. On the nose, it opens with fruity notes of cherry, plum, and raspberry, accompanied by spicy notes of vanilla, black pepper, and licorice. On the palate, it is enveloping and soft, with elegant tannins and a long, lingering aroma. A wine with a strong character, embodying the soul of the region in which it is produced. Pair with meats in sauce and truffles.

Antonio Galloni, November 2022 (Vintage 2016)

The 2016 Barolo Riserva Rüncot is quite possibly the single greatest wine I have tasted in more than twenty years I have been coming here, with the possible exception of the 1989s and 1990s. Deep and powerful, but not at all heavy, the 2016 dazzles from the very first taste. Dark cherry/plum fruit, menthol, lavender, licorice and mocha saturate the palate in a Barolo of extraordinary richness and intensity. The 2016 spent four years in 100% new oak, and yet there is no trace at all of wood. Magnificent

Bruce Sanderson, April 2024 (Vintage 2016)

Shows an initial impression of vanilla and spices, especially in the aromas, yet underneath is a solid line of cherry, raspberry, wild scrub and iron flavors. An elegant and intense red, with refined tannins and a lingering, nervy finish. Best from 2026 through 2045. 650 cases made.

Monica Larner, April 2024 (Vintage 2016)

The Elio Grasso 2016 Barolo Riserva Rüncot is intense and powerful. However, there are a number of tertiary notes, some veering all the way to porcino mushroom and wood pile, but you also get threads of ripe black cherry, plum and even some dried prune. You can't escape a note of painters' studio with linseed oil. Bitter cacao or rhubarb also appear. This is an excellent example of an aged Barolo Riserva, but ultimately, you'll get more pleasure drinking this in the medium term without having to age it. She's ready to go.
