About this winery

Founded in 1925 in Monforte d'Alba, Giovanni Manzone is a family-run winery known for its dedication to traditional Piedmontese wines. The estate focuses on high-altitude, steep hillside vineyards, including renowned crus such as Gramolere and Castelletto, producing an elegant and age-worthy Barolo. Manzone follows a sustainable approach with organic practices, low yields, spontaneous fermentation, and extended aging in large Slavonian oak barrels. The estate also produces vibrant Barbera...

Product notes

These old vines are over 50 years old, and the steep slope of the hill only allows for manual work. The exposure is south-southwest; the soil is limestone and sandy, rich in stones and fossils. Barolo Riserva Gramolere is produced only in prestigious vintages, and the small production of a few thousand bottles is marketed approximately seven years after the harvest.

Production notes

The grapes come from a single vineyard located in the municipality of Gramolere, in Monforte d'Alba. The hand-picked grapes take place in mid- to late October to ensure perfect ripeness. Natural fermentation with the skins lasts 30 to 40 days, with gentle pumping over to ensure delicate polyphenol extraction. After 5 years of aging in barrels and a few months of rest in stainless steel vats, the wine is bottled during the waning moon.

Tasting notes

This elegant Barolo has a vibrant ruby red color and a rich texture. It displays typical notes of rose, cherry, and wild berries, with a slightly spicy and balsamic touch. Silky, full-bodied, and supple, it boasts balanced tannins and good acidity. Pair with game and red meats

James Suckling, November 2024 (Vintage 2017)

An attractive nose of ripe cherries, plum skin, dried flowers and hints of sandalwood, toasted cedar and tar. Structured and broad, it has a full body with firm, chewy tannins that are finely crafted. Deep and layered without being overpowering, it finishes smooth and lingering. Better from 202

Antomio Galloni, September 2024 (Vintage 2017)

The 2017 Barolo Gramolere Riserva is potent, deep wine. Macerated red cherry, cinnamon, spice, new leather, incense, kirsch and tobacco all take shape in the glass. Bright Gramolere acids appear on the mid palate and nish, adding lift, vibrancy and persistence. This is a very pretty and expressive Riserva that can be enjoyed now or cellared.
