About this winery

Cantine Rizzi is one of the most impressive wineries in Piedmont. Situated atop a ridge on the road (via Rizzi) that leads to Treiso (one of the best sub-areas of Barbaresco), the estate offers some of the most spectacular 360 degree views you will find anywhere. Since 1974, the Dellapiano family (led by Ernesto and now his son Enrico) has produced a variety of wines, including Barbera, Dolcetto, Sparkling, Chardonnay and especially four single site and select Barbarescos. Product notes

It comes from the estate’s Nervo Cru vineyard, confining with the Bernardot Cru. The steep slopes make working conditions harder but at the same time improve the drainage system and the solar exposition. The perfect microclimatic conditions and the poor soil (white marl clayey-calcareous) give the wine density and exemplary finesse. Soil: white marl clayey-calcareous, alternated by sand. Year of planting: 1967 - 2004. Altitude: 310 - 370 a.s.l. Exposure: South. First year of production: 1999 as Barbaresco “Fondetta”.

Production notes

Harvest manual in small crates, in the first ten days of October (with slight variations depending on weather conditions). Fermentation and maceration: In stainless steel vats at a controlled temperature not over the 30°C for a peiod of about 3-4 weeks. Following the alcoholic fermentation, the wine is racked and undergoes a malolactic fermentation, which normally lasts a month. Ageing: For about 12 months in large Slavonian oak barrels, then into concrete vats for 6-9 months and then bottled before being released onto the market.

Tasting notes

Wine-red garnet, with a slight orange note, clear and bright with fine perfumes, elegant, full, and purple berries, rose, and berries (raspberry in the first place) and then spices (especially cinnamon), with a vein of licorice. The mouth then, impresses with its beautiful dense matter, earthy, mineral, to underscore the right of perfectly ripe tannins that don’t bite but they rightly felt, for a warm and sweet fruit, not without some rough youth. Wine characterized by elegance, femininity and elegance. Pairing with Steak and Lamb

James Suckling, January 2025 (Vintage 2022)

A restrained wine with aromas of bright licorice, strawberries, blood oranges and a touch of dried flowers. Firm, lightly framed tannins, crisp acidity and a medium body. Good length and integration, with a tight finish. Best after 2025.
