About this winery

Cantine Rizzi is one of the most impressive wineries in Piedmont. Situated atop a ridge on the road (via Rizzi) that leads to Treiso (one of the best sub-areas of Barbaresco), the estate offers some of the most spectacular 360 degree views you will find anywhere. Since 1974, the Dellapiano family (led by Ernesto and now his son Enrico) has produced a variety of wines, including Barbera, Dolcetto, Sparkling, Chardonnay and especially four single site and select Barbarescos. Product notes

Year of planting: 1965 - 2008. Altitude: 230 - 300 a.s.l. Exposure: South. First year of production: 2004.

Production notes

Harvest Manual in small crates, in the first ten days of October (with slight variations depending on weather conditions). Fermentation and maceration: In stainless steel vats at a controlled temperature not over the 30°C for a peiod of about 3-4 weeks. Following the alcoholic fermentation, the wine is racked and undergoes a malolactic fermentation, which normally lasts a month. Ageing: for about 12 months in large Slavonian oak barrels, then into concrete vats for 6-9 months and then bottled before being released onto the market.

Tasting notes

Deep garnet red in color; the nose reveals a beautiful and sensual fragrance with a rich complexity and intense floral component of violet and rose, and a very crisp red fruit, raspberry and strawberry, with notes of leather, evolutionary spicy, black pepper, cloves, and licorice. Its taste is full and mellow, very balanced, with a nice tannic structure. It’s a Barbaresco that combines finesse and power, femininity and masculine elegance and mineral. Pairing with Porter House and Lamb

Monica Larner, January 2025 (Vintage 2021)

This wine comes from a historic cru measuring three hectares. The Rizzi 2021 Barbaresco Pajorè is quite streamlined and fine, maybe too much so, depending on how you call it. It shows mild aromas of blue flower, cassis and crushed stone. This is a production of 4,400 bottles.

James Suckling, October 2024 (Vintage 2021)

A perfumed nose of dried rose hips, tea leaf, grapefruit peel and red cherries on offer. Firm and structured with lightly chewy tannins, yet it has juicy and lively fruit character on the medium-bodied palate, ending with a mineral, lightly chalky finish. Try after 2027.

Walter Speller, August 2024 (Vintage 2021)

Treiso. Just mid ruby. Slumbering, mineral-driven nose with touches of spice. Gorgeous, elegant palate weight. Elegant, cool raspberry fruit and super-fine tannins in equal measure.
