About this winery

The success of Château de La Chaize is based on respect for terroirs and the unique know-how acquired over 350 years. Using a parcel-by-parcel approach, the estate has 23 cadastral parcels, spread across the Brouilly, Côte de Brouilly, Fleurie and Morgon appellations, and each parcel is vinified and aged separately to reveal its character and uniqueness.

Product notes

This single-plot cuvée comes from vines nestled on the western slope of Mont Brouilly. This Côte-de-Brouilly vintage is distinguished by the uniqueness of its soil: the plot, which slopes moderately to steeply, consists of highly porous surface soil with a high sand content, favoring deep root exploration. This is a high-quality terroir, dominated by pink sands derived from granite. In the subsoil, granite alterite appears at a depth of around 60-80 cm, whose friable nature allows roots to continue their exploration.

Production notes

Vinification by plot (100% Gamay Noir) / 100% destemmed / Maceration: 21 days of maceration. Pumping over and rack and return. No punching down. Sulfiting after MLF and at bottling / Aging: 14 months in tuns

Tasting notes

A primary ruby color of beautiful intensity. The nose seduces with its delicate fruit. A combination of floral notes and the hint of morello cherry from the Gamay. The overall effect is precise and deep, with the added bonus of highlighting the graphite dimension of the soil. The oak is nuanced. The palate is balanced, the texture is graceful, the tannins are layered without excess, and the power is managed by this mineral support that stretches the palate. This is the most accomplished definition of terroir. Pair with flank steak.

James Suckling, June 2025 (Vintage 2023)

This seriously structured Brouilly has a lot of power but remains graceful with a compact core of tightly interlocked fine tannins and stony minerality. The very bright and precise finish has understated strength. From a site on the western flank of Mont Brouilly with mainly pink granite but also some blue volcanic soil. From organically grown grapes. This could show even better after a year or two of further bottle-aging. Drinkable now but best from 2026.
