About this winery

The success of Château de La Chaize is based on respect for terroirs and the unique know-how acquired over 350 years. Using a parcel-by-parcel approach, the estate has 23 cadastral parcels, spread across the Brouilly, Côte de Brouilly, Fleurie and Morgon appellations, and each parcel is vinified and aged separately to reveal its character and uniqueness.

Product notes

In the heart of the Brouilly appellation, in the commune of Odenas and the place called "La Chaize" Monopole, the Clos de La Chaize is ideally located behind the Château, on a rectangular plot backing onto the hillside, remarkably exposed East. This plot is composed of Gamay Noir vines, planted on a porphyroid granite soil, which gives elegance and length to the wines. Surrounded by a stone wall, the clos protects the vines from pests and allows for a favorable microclimate. It facilitates good ripening of the grapes, in particular by radiation from the walls, by restoring the heat of the sun. The vineyard is managed manually, with total grassing, to favor microbial life and fight against erosion. Winter maintenance is carried out by sheep to limit soil compaction. Created in 1676, according to the golden ratio according to the plans of Jules Harouin Mansart, the Clos de La Chaize is today one of the four clos planted with vines listed in the inventory.

Production notes

Harvest yields are controlled, deliberately low, to facilitate the proper ripening of the grapes and the sustainability of the vines. The grapes for this cuvée were hand-harvested on September 5, 2020, and transported in small, 13-kg perforated crates to limit crushing of the berries and thus premature oxidation of the juices during transport. The grapes are brought back to the historic vat room and carefully sorted to retain only the finest berries. To preserve the authenticity of the terroir, the wine is vinified (with 20% whole grapes) specifically using a low-intervention, entirely gravity-fed method, unfiltered and unfined. After vertical pressing to finely extract the juice, only the first half of the press is retained to obtain noble tannins. After 17 days of maceration in concrete vats, the wine was aged in foudres for 18 months.

Tasting notes

A beautiful deep ruby color. The nose reveals a palette of black fruits such as black cherry and blackberry. The nose is juicy, defined by the very ripe harvest. The complexity is provided by spices, pepper, and balsamic notes from the aging process. The oak is just right; it delicately highlights the definition of the aromas. The palate is full-bodied with a fleshy mid-palate that possesses body and consistency. This is a wine with lovely concentration and quality tannic support that tightens the palate. The fruit remains juicy and quenches this noble substance. This is an excellent wine for aging that will evolve positively over ten years. Pair with Rib of Beef and Rib of Veal

James Suckling, June 2024 (Vintage 2020)

One of the new giants of Beaujolais that nonetheless retains the lightness of touch and elegance of these wines. Enormous concentration of sour cherry, cassis and forest berry aromas is married to an expertly crafted tannin structure that is so detailed and so fascinating. Incredibly long, compact and energetic finish that leaves you breathless. Very limited production. From organically grown grapes grown in a genuine clos that is completely surrounded by a high stone wall. Drinkable now, but best from 2025.
