About this winery

Founded in 1925 in Monforte d'Alba, Giovanni Manzone is a family-run winery known for its dedication to traditional Piedmontese wines. The estate focuses on high-altitude, steep hillside vineyards, including renowned crus such as Gramolere and Castelletto, producing an elegant and age-worthy Barolo. Product notes

The vines are approximately 35 years old, and the steep slope of the hill allows for manual work only. The exposure is south-southwest; the soil is sandy and rich in stones and fossils. The first vintage was produced in 1971. A few thousand bottles of Barolo Gramolere are produced and marketed approximately five years after harvest.

Production notes

The grapes come from a single vineyard located in the municipality of Gramolere, in Monforte d'Alba. The hand-picked grapes take place in mid- to late October to ensure perfect ripeness. Natural fermentation with the skins lasts 30 to 40 days, with gentle pumping over to ensure delicate polyphenol extraction. After approximately three years of aging in barrels and a few months of rest in concrete vats, the wine is bottled during the waning moon.

Tasting notes

This elegant Barolo has a vibrant ruby red color and a rich texture. It displays typical notes of rose, cherry, and wild berries, with a slightly spicy and balsamic touch. Silky, full-bodied, and supple, it boasts balanced tannins and good acidity. Pair with game and red meats

Antonio Galloni, September 2023 (Vintage 2019)

The 2019 Barolo Gramolere is a brilliant, classically austere wine that will delight readers who enjoy linear, taut Barolos. All the elements are so well balanced. Crushed owers, mint, pine, spice and lavender are some of the many notes that grace this ethereal but deep, super-expressive Barolo.

Monica Larner, April 2024 (Vintage 2019)

With fruit from Monforte d'Alba, the Manzone 2019 Barolo Gramolere offers a combination of plump redcurrant and sweet oak spice. You taste the fruit and the winemaking, and both sides of this Barolo are delivered with good intensity. Ultimately, aromas from the oak aging supersede those of the fruit, and you are left with a dry mouthfeel and toasted flavors. The tannins are dry and smooth.

Monforte d’Alba. Mid-to-deep ruby with orange tinges. Complex, savoury oak over still-subdued, soft, aromatic red fruit. Quite gorgeous on the palate with juicy, ripe raspberry fruit and crunchy tannins. Can already be approached.
