About this winery

The San Giuseppe Winery takes its name from the sharecropping estate established by Giuseppe Martelli in 1910. Abandoned in 1940, the estate was acquired by the Stella Viola di Campalto in 1992. Stella is deeply devoted to the rhythms, culture, and beauty of Montalcino. The 13-hectare San Giuseppe estate includes 6.7 hectares of vineyards. A great deal of time and resources are devoted to maintaining the natural ecosystem in and around the vineyards, resulting in wines that are pure,...

Product notes

Bosco means “forest” in Italian.

Production notes

Each vineyard is harvested individually and vinified separately. Grapes are sorted by hand and flow by gravity from the top of a three-level cellar. Fermentation takes places in small wooden vats from 20HL to 40HL with indigenous yeast without pied de cuve. Aged 33 months in 15 and 17HL barrels, then 18 months in bottle.

Tasting notes

The Bosco and Curva vineyards are rich in clay, leading to good nutrient retention that can contribute to strong tannins, good color extraction, structured body, and the potential for complex aromas. San Giuseppe and Ulivo soils have an alkaline pH, yielding wines that display crisp acidity. The result wines showcase vibrant fruit flavors, moderate acidity, and a lighter body. The sandy component can also contribute to a more approachable texture in the wine.Pairing suggestions : Grilled lamb or steak; porcini risotto; aged cheese.

Monica Larner, November 2024 (Vintage 2018)

This is a very special wine from Stella di Campalto that marches forward like a little toy soldier. The 2018 Brunello di Montalcino Podere S. Giuseppe Bosco was released earlier in 2024. The wine has a hard side with ferrous mineral, earth and rust that frame a dark core of fruit. It is a blend of fruit from the Sasso, Leccio and Curva Lato Bosco vineyard sites. The latter, Bosco, or "forest," remains important to this estate, as the vines are planted in close proximity to the rich biodiversity and underground root mycorrhiza that Stella di Campalto credits with keeping her vines healthy and strong. This expression is just beautiful and is my favorite among these new releases. It shows a bigger tannic signature that will translate into long cellar aging. The wine is named after a verse from a song because she says "rhythm is key" to this bottle.

Eric Guido, June 2024 (Vintage 2018)

The word serenity comes to mind when reecting on the 2018 Brunello di Montalcino Bosco. This takes the freshness and nesse of the vintage and matches it perfectly to the Campalto house style. A cascade of exotic owers mixes with earth tones, hints of spice and dried strawberries. It hovers across the palate, seemingly weightless yet truly impactful, as vividly red berry fruits are propelled by tantalizing acidity. A suggestion of lavender embellishes the close. The slightest tug of sweet tannins comes together with a gentle mineral tinge as the 2018 nishes long and perfumed. This understated beauty holds its power in reserve. I love it.
