About this winery

Tenuta San Leonardo, with its approximately 300-year history, is undeniably one of Trentino's leading wine estates and has long produced one of the region's finest wines: the red of the same name. Today, San Leonardo boasts around 20 hectares of vineyards planted with international grape varieties that thrive thanks to the estate's diverse microclimates. The majority of the vines are planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, but Carmenère, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot are also abundant. Cultivation...

Product notes

Terre, a Bordeaux blend like San Leonardo and from the same terroir, follows in the footsteps of its "big brother," offering remarkable freshness and enviable balance. The vines that produce Terre di San Leonardo are located within the ancient walls of the monastery, on light, sandy soils for the Cabernet Sauvignon and Carmenère, and clay soils with excellent drainage for the Merlot.

Production notes

Spontaneous fermentation and maceration take place over 12 to 15 days in small concrete vats with several daily changes and sporadic racking. After aging for 12 months (50% in concrete vats and 50% in medium-toasted French oak barrels and casks during the second and third rotations), the wine is bottled and rests for at least 6 months in our cellars.

Tasting notes

Intense and brilliant ruby color. Fresh, fruity, slightly spicy and balsamic, with notes of raspberry, aromatic herbs, and black cherry. The palate is round, focused, aromatic, and above all, fresh. Pairs well with meat lasagna, poultry, and flank steak.

James Suckling, April 2025 (Vintage 2020)

An elegant, cool-climate wine with aromas of citrus leaves, kiwis, eucalyptus, leather, smoke and dark tobacco. Medium-bodied, it shows leafy flavors, soft and elegant silky tannins, crisp yet integrated acidity, a brilliant finish and a long, brooding aftertaste. Vegan. Sustainable. Drinkable now, but best from 2026.

Jeff Porter, December 2025 (Vintage 2021)

This wine tells stories. It starts with bright red berries then deepens into plums and spices, like a conversation that gets better as the night goes on. The tannins are so refined they feel like they were tailored on Savile Row. There's an energy here that makes you want to slow down and pay attention, but it's so good you keep forgetting to take notes.

James Suckling, August 2024 (Vintage 2021)

Savory spices, dried leaves, red plums, charcoal, currants and iron on the nose. Juicy and fine-grained on the palate, with a medium body and a succulent, peppery finish. Cabernet sauvignon, merlot and carmenere. Drink now.

Monica Larner, November 2025 (Vintage 2021)

A blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Carmenère, the Tenuta San Leonardo 2021 Terre di San Leonardo offers a little more volume than the 2022 vintage of this same wine. The 2021 growing season was slightly cooler, and as a result, you get dark fruit flavors with blackberry and plum. Both vintages have a mid-weight finish, but you get more length here.
