About this winery

Tenuta San Leonardo, with its approximately 300-year history, is undeniably one of Trentino's leading wine estates and has long produced one of the region's finest wines: the red of the same name. Today, San Leonardo boasts around 20 hectares of vineyards planted with international grape varieties that thrive thanks to the estate's diverse microclimates. The majority of the vines are planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, but Carmenère, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot are also abundant. Cultivation...

Product notes

The vines that produce Terre di San Leonardo are located within the ancient walls of the monastery, on light, sandy soils for the Cabernet Sauvignon and Carmenère; and clay soils with excellent drainage for the Merlot.

Production notes

Spontaneous fermentation takes place over 12 to 15 days in small concrete vats with periodic pump-overs and rackings. The wine is then aged for 24 months, 70% in barrels and 30% in medium-toast French oak barrels (first, second, and third use), followed by final blending. The wine is then bottled and rests for at least 24 months in our cellars.

Tasting notes

Intense ruby robe with garnet highlights. Aromas of wild berries, balsamic notes, undergrowth, tobacco, and aromatic herbs. The palate is vibrant and elegant, with refined tannins, remarkable balance, and depth. Pairs well with ribeye steak and lamb chops.

Eric Guido, December 2025 (Vintage 2020)

The 2020 San Leonardo wafts up with a deeply alluring bouquet that blends nuances of Earl Grey with white pepper, dried roses and crushed raspberries. It is soothingly round and savory, as tart red fruits flow across the palate, leaving a sour citrus tension and salty mineral saturation toward the close. Classically dry and refined, this leaves smooth tannins and a sour berry resonance to contrast as minty herbal tones fade slowly. The 2020 is simply stunning and possesses an old-school feel, matched by a modest 12.5% alcohol.

Jeff Porter, November 2025 (Vintage 2020)

This wine doesn't walk into a room, it glides. Dark fruits wrapped in warming spices with violets floating above it all. Everything feels perfectly placed but completely natural, like a great jazz solo. The finish keeps going like a conversation you never want to end. The kind of wine that makes dinner feel like an event, even if you're just having leftovers. Drink Now - 2035

Monica Larner, November 2025 (Vintage 2020)

The 2020 San Leonardo is a historic blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenère and Merlot born from the vision of the Guerrieri Gonzaga family and the legendary Italian enologist Giacomo Tachis, who worked on this wine from 1985 until 2002 (when current winemaker Carlo Ferrini took over). San Leonardo shares a similar blueprint as Sassicaia, and like that giant of Tuscany, this bottle really starts to strut its stuff with at least 10 years of bottle age. At this young stage, it shows tart berry flavors and some green herbal overtones. Experience teaches us that the wine starts off slow but eventually leans into polished, silky tannins and bright flavor intensity. Patience is required.
