About this winery

The agricultural enterprise Chiappini is in the heart of the DOC Bolgheri at Via Bolgherese, the road where the most important wine estates of the Bolgheri region are located. The story of this farm tells us about the consistently renewed family tradition of the head of the family, Giovanni Chiappini, son of farmers that had moved from Marche to the Bolgheri region in the fifties. This tradition was inherited by the two daughters Martina and Lisa who assist their father in the estate. The...

Tasting notes

A deep, impressive color, a perfect expression of the Bolgheri region's characteristics. Elegance, power, and complexity characterize this wine, capable of aging for many years and constantly refining its bouquet over the years, evolving from notes of ripe red fruits, vanilla, and spices to an extremely complex one with hints of licorice, tobacco, cedar, and cinnamon. A frank, sweet, and long finish. Pair with barbecued meats

Monica Larner, February 2025 (Vintage 2021)

A blend of 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Cabernet Franc and 20% Merlot, the Chiappini 2021 Bolgheri Superiore Guado de' Gemoli is a richly extracted red wine that delivers the power and focus of the vintage in full force. There's no doubting the hot-vintage ripeness of the fruit, the generous use of oak and all the other elements that give this wine such a large footprint. The character is a little old school, but the qualities of the vintage shine through nicely in this nice executed wine. The grapes are sourced from three hectares of 30-year-old vines. This is a 10,000-bottle release.

Fragrant sandalwood, aniseed, chiles, chocolate and purple berry fruit on the nose. It’s full-bodied, polished and velvety with broad and creamy tannins. Long and intense. Unfiltered. Drink or hold.

Antomio Galloni, December 2024 (Vintage 2021)

The 2021 Guado de’ Gemoli, the Chiappini agship, is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc that spent 20 months in French oak barrels. There’s more richness, extraction and overall structure than the Feliciano, but I am not sure there’s more complexity or pleasure to be found. To be sure, the Guado oers notable textural presence, but the tannins are also rather forbidding now that Chiappini has dialed back the size of their wines. The 2021 is promising, but it's also very clearly a work in progress.

Sweet, luscious, hedonistic nose. There’s something bordelais about this wine which finishes dry but not drying. Quite savoury and appetising. But not ready. (JR)
